A stylish kitchen on a budget

You don’t have to break the bank to transform your kitchen into a functional and stylish space. Here’s how to upgrade without spending a fortune.

Change the walls

A splash of paint or a wallpapered wall will inspire and give a tired kitchen a new look. Using the best quality kitchen paint or wallpaper needn't cost a lot. Go for a striking bold colour on a feature wall, or something a little more neutral.

Wallpaper for the kitchen is really popular at the moment, and you can find some great designs such as exposed brickwork or tropical.

What can you replace?

Depending on your budget, consider replacing cabinet doors or worktops. Even replacing door handles can make a difference to the look of your kitchen. If you can't afford to replace cabinets, painting them is a great option.

Another affordable idea is new taps – it's amazing what an impact such a subtle change can make.

Give lighting a makeover

Lighting creates a focal point and is also a practical addition to the kitchen. The working area of a kitchen should be well lit, and subtle lighting can create atmosphere in corners and under cabinets.

Treat yourself

A few new kitchen items will enhance your kitchen makeover. Freshen things up with new tea towels, storage jars, a bin, pictures for the walls and a new appliance like a kettle or toaster. And a single plant, vase of flowers or bowl of fruit on a clear worktop gives a sophisticated look – just like in the magazines!

Create a dining area

Even the smallest kitchen has room for a dining area. With careful planning you could fit in a breakfast bar or mobile unit to sit at. Or why not consider having some hand-made wooden seating made? The cost of the materials and fitting might be less than you think and with some handy shelves or baskets underneath you've created a useful storage space. Top with cushions and you've got the perfect cosy seating area.

Buy second hand

Search markets and car boot sales for dressers, mobile islands, bar stools and shelves. These can transform your kitchen and create extra storage space too. Someone else's cast-off could be a treasure in your kitchen.
