Camping without waste - how to do it

Summer is holiday time! It's time to go out together, relax and enjoy each other's company and your free time. But how do you do that sustainably? And how do you recycle and separate waste on holiday? Discover our tips for a waste-free (camping) holiday.

Bring your own recycling bin.

Waste separation is also possible on holiday. For example, take a couple of the practical Sort&Go bins with you. They are light, they can hold a lot of things during the trip, and once you've unpacked them, they are a great way to dispose of your waste. Full? With the handle you can easily carry them to a waste disposal point. Don't want to leave any waste behind? Put your bio-waste in a compost bin and take it home for your own compost pile.

Plan, plan, plan!

Going on a short camping trip? Make a menu of what you are going to eat each day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Then, make a shopping list and head out to the grocery store (remember to take your own bag and avoid buying single-use plastics!). Try to prep as much as possible before you go. Cut up your fruit and vegetables at home, grate your cheese in advance and bake some quiches in advance. It's easy and you don't have to bring a lot of cooking equipment with you. It is also a good way of using up perishable products before you go away. Otherwise, when you get home, you might end up throwing everything away. Our meal prepping blog provides useful tips and tools for cooking ahead.

Make a mess of it

If you buy packaged snacks, put them in reusable containers or jars at home. The waste can then be recycled in a normal way. Don't forget to bring spices, oils and dressings, loose tea, ground coffee and the likes. Tip: These small goods fit perfectly in our space-saving stackable storage cans! They help things stay fresh for longer- and- you can easily keep track of how much you have left!

Save water

You need water to drink, to cook with and to clean. With a water tank with a tap, you always have water handy, even for cleanup chores. Speaking of chores, our SinkSide dishwashing products are super compact to carry with you. Ideal for use in the tent, and certainly handy in a camper!

Reusable kitchen utensils

Bring reusable utensils and plates instead of disposables. Don’t own any? Check out your local charity shops as they often stock reusable plates and picnic sets. And why not invest in some light tableware made from bamboo? Bamboo can be composted when it is no longer usable and it is adequately broken down! As for making use of the table and having a good meal, many of our Tasty+ kitchen utensils are multi-functional and will save you space, so you can avoid the stress of carrying too much cookware.

Build a fire

Looking for some fire starters for your campfire or barbecue? No need! Corks, lemon peel and pine cones all make great homemade fire starters. Leave lemon peels to dry in the sun until they are completely hardened, then use them to light your fire. You can also fill half a lemon with sawdust and beeswax or paper shavings and set it alight. Or, corks soaked in disinfectant alcohol work a treat too (just make sure you leave them in a sealed jar to soak beforehand). Pine cone firelighters are even easier, and a great way to reuse candle stumps. Just melt the candle wax or wax, pour it over the pine cones and you have yourself a new and improved candle!

Happy holidays!
