How to transform your kitchen without spending a fortune

We can’t all afford a new kitchen when we want one. But with these super-smart ideas, you can transform your kitchen into a practical and workable space that you’ll love spending time in. Here’s how to create your dream kitchen on a budget.

Get painting

This is the quickest and easiest way to spruce things up. A lick of paint will freshen up the walls and even the units if you're feeling adventurous. Make sure you clean surfaces first (grease builds up in kitchens) and use special kitchen paint. Why not be brave and try white walls with a contrasting colour for the unit doors or one wall? Let your imagination go!

Declutter

Get rid of appliances you no longer use to free up space. When did you last use that sandwich toaster or lemon squeezer? Sort out chipped and old crockery you never use and bin it as it’s just taking up valuable space.

Accessorise

Shop around for bargains and buy some nice new items to replace those you’ve thrown away. New kitchen items can really liven things up and don’t have to cost a fortune. A new kettle, toaster, bin, sink organiser, storage drawer and even new tea towels will make such a difference.

Clean the grout

Use a bleach-based cleaner and old toothbrush to scrub away any grime and dirt off the grout. Then use a grout pen to go over the old grout. Your tiles will look like new!

Handles

New handles for your drawers and units can really change the appearance of your kitchen. If you're on a budget, this is the perfect way to make things feel like new.

Lighting

Good kitchen lighting is key to a well-functioning kitchen. Under-unit lighting can make such a difference, giving your kitchen extra light and atmosphere. You’ll find plug-in or freestanding versions in all DIY stores relatively cheaply.

Kitchen sink

A set of shiny new taps can really boost the look of your sink and is cheaper than buying and fitting a whole sink. Add some smart new sink accessories like a drying rack, washing up brush and cloths and you’re good to go!
